Mermaid Treasure Box, My Nest, Stash, Stitching / May 8, 2007 by Michelle / 54 Comments

MTB Jan 06

Eric suggested recently that I pull something out to stitch on that hasn’t seen the light of day in awhile. So, I decided to stitch on Mermaid Treasure Box (Chatelaine Designs). I bought this chart as a birthday present for myself in 2005, and began stitching it in late September of 2005 in between parts of Midi Mystery I (my first Chatelaine). With the move and the wedding and everything, it just got packed away in the closet and not touched since January of 2006. Above you can see how it looked last January.

Weekend before last I pulled this out again and began stitching on it. I’ve stitched on it the past two weekends and I am just loving it. I never fell out of love with it, it just somehow got packed away. I intend to keep stitching on it for a little while, and have included it in my May goals. I think I can easily finish up part 1 this month. I have a little more to do on those bottom corners, and then the rest is specialty stitches which go very fast. I’m going to save the beading until I finish the whole box top. Here’s what the finished piece will look like.

Mermaid Treasure

And this is my progress as of Sunday night on it.

MTB 050707

If only there were a way to really capture how silks glow in person. I’ve never been able to do this with my camera. Anyway, over the weekend I also picked up a little bit of stash – BBD’s Flea Market Sampler, LHN’s Home of a Needleworker and some threads for my June sheep blanket. Perhaps once the sheep has all his blankets I will have to take him on tour and photograph him in different places like Yarn Harlot does with her sock.

Stash 050607

I’ve been thinking about how to possibly work in some of my other crafting with my stitching. I want to bead, quilt, knit, paint. Oh, and did I mention I write poetry too? I’m thinking I may see if I can work something in on the weekends. I really need to practice my knitting if I ever hope to learn how to do anything other than a basic knit stitch. This weekend we are going to Austin to see my great aunt and visit with my sister and parents too. We’ll go on Saturday and come back Sunday, so perhaps I can work on something in the car again.

Oh and one last thing, take a look at this beautiful marquoir. Anne-Valerie is charting a sampler her stepmother’s great-grandmother stitched and releasing the parts of the pattern every couple of weeks as a freebie on her blog. I think it would be gorgeous stitched in muted silks. Part 1 is available, and Part 2 is scheduled to be posted on May 19th.

I am grateful for visions of the life I want and gratitude for the life I have.

That has to be one of my all-time fave Chatelaines – I had the amazing opportunity to see a finished one ‘in the flesh’ last year, and it’s just exquisite! I’m hanging out for it to be re-released in print form, but in the meantime I can drool while watching yours grow 😀 Your quilt blocks are totally scrummy too – love those bright colours! 😀

Happy Sunday, friends! This piece was a mystery sa Happy Sunday, friends! This piece was a mystery sampler published in the first five issues of The Gift of Stitching magazine beginning in February of 2006. I started this in 2007 and finally finished it several years later, turning it into a ten year anniversary sampler for Eric and I. I chose my fabric based on what Carol of Garden of Stitches chose for hers. I ran out of one of the Vikki Clayton silks midway through this piece and @senoritastitches kindly lent me some of hers so I could finish (this was pre-Vikki returning to dyeing).

I really love this piece with its motifs and specialty stitches, so I wanted to share it for both #xstitchsamplersunday and #saltboxstitcherweeklysamplerpal - @carolfun53 has been doing her #xstitchsamplersunday for about a year now, so I highly recommend taking a look at all the beautiful pieces shared on that hashtag.
